The European Union agreed on June 5, 2009 to take a unified stand against whaling. Environmental ministers meeting in Luxembourg adopted a common position that supports the current moratorium against commercial whaling, sets up whale sanctuaries, and encourages the use of non-lethal methods to collect scientific data. “There is no need to kill whales to obtain scientific information about whales as adequate data for management purposes can be obtained using non-lethal techniques,” said the EU’s Executive Commission.

The European Commission has been working diligently to establish this joint position, and even though the 27 nation bloc is not yet a party to the International Whaling Commission it can still take a strong role at the IWC meeting in Santiago, Chile later this month by using it’s moral, political, and economic weight to ensure more effective protection of whales worldwide.

You may have heard Greenpeace boasting that they helped save the Minke Whales from the japanese whalers, but this is not true. It was the Sea Shepherd organization that kept the whalers on the run because the japanese knew that Sea Shepherd would aggresively intervene to stop the them from harpooning Whales. Greenpeace was just looking for a few photo oprotunities by zipping around in their rubber dinges to raise money for their organization. When they ran out of fuel they abandoned the whales and went back to their cozy homes to run their spin PR campaigns.

Greenpece says they are non-violent and so do not support Sea Shepherds tactics. So let me ask you this. If someone were going to stab you in the back with a knife and kill you would you defend yourself against the attacker to stop the attack or allow them to stab and kill you? If someone was going to kill one of your loved one’s, perhaps a family member, would you allow this to happen? I think not.

The japanese whalers are harpooning the whales in the back and killing them because they are easy targets and have no way of defending themselves. They whales are sentient, aware, and a highly evolved species. They have been on our planet for 20 million years- much longer than humans. So it is up to conscious compassionate humans to intervene on the whales behalf.

Sea Shepherd does not want to intentionally cause harm to the japanese. They want them to stop killing the whales. Sea Shepherds actions are non-violent because being non- violent means living with loving kindness, having respect for all species, and not intentionally causing harm to another. It does not mean passively allowing someone else to hurt you. We all have the right to defend ourselves against an attack and that is what Sea Shepherd is doing- defending the helpless whales against the lethal japanese harpoons.

If you go to www.Seashepherd.org you will see that the Dalai Lama, who preaches non violence, endorses Sea Shepherds actions of defending our precious ocean species. He has written a beautiful eloquent letter to that effect.

What upsets me the most about the Japanese hunting and killing whales and dolphins and any other nationality that does this is that they are interfering with another evolved mammalian species right to live peacefully and happily upon our earth. They don’t take the time to understand why cetaceans are so peaceful and seem so happy and how we humans have and could benefit from contact with the cetacean species. They have to shut down their hearts as they become cold blooded killing machines!!!

For most people, something wonderful, magical and awe inspiring occurs when humans witness dolphins and whales in their natural environment. They exude a sense of grace, grandeur and majesty. And they do so while spending their day living peacefully with each other and their environment.

What do they do with all their free time cruising through three dimensional watery space? I think they are singing love songs to each other and playing together. And yet we know so little about how evolved they really are, what they really think, what they communicate, how conscious they are, what they think about humans etc.

So let’s stop harming dolphins and whales and take the time to really explore if it is possible to have interspecies communication and what is it that is being communicated. Why is it that so many people love to go whale and dolphin watching? There has got to be something to it. How about this – our hearts fly open and expand with love as we watch these magnificent beings leap out of the water with the greatest of ease.

I hope that one day soon the whales will allow me to be close to them so that I can tell them from the depth of my heart… I love you whales, I love you whales, I love you whales.
