As the Japanese Whaling fleet tries to kill whales in Antartica they have admitted they have 3000 tons of unsold whale meat in freezers. So on Jan. 21 and Jan.22 they gave 200,000 free lunches of whale meat salad to school kids in Japan. The schools hadn’t served whale meat in 26 years. Apparently there were no plans for a second whale meat lunch.
The Leading Liberal Democratic Party Upper House member Yoshimasa Hayashi ,who also chairs Japan’s I.W.C. committee meetings, admitted there was a deliberate attempt by the government to revive a domestic market for whale meat by encouraging children to develop a taste for whale meat- despite high mercury content.
In a suprise concession, Mr. Hayashi said Japan would consider ending whaling operations in Antartica in the future if they were allowed to extend their coastal whaling program. He said it would depend on U.S. leadership to bridge the differences at the next IWC meeting. So it appears that the rumor I mentioned in my last post was true. How very sad…
