” The Cetacean hold an important lesson for us. The lesson is not about whales and dolphins. There is at least some moderately convincing evidence that there is another class of intelligent beings on earth beside ourselves. They have behaved beningly and in many cases affectionately towards us. We have systematically slaughtered them. Little reverence for life is evident in the whaling industry- underscoring a deep human failing. In warfare, man against man, it is common for each side to dehumanize the other so that there will be none of the natural misgivings that a human being has slaughtered another.” CARL SAGAN

The movie, The Cove, wins an Oscar for Best Documentary!!! This brings worldwide attention to the people in Japan and other nations who are harming dolphins and whales.

I was surprised to see Ric O’Barry hold up the sign, text dolphin 44144, during Louie Psihoyos acceptance speech for best documentary. This prevented Louie from giving his speech as the network cut off coverage when the sign came up. Their message was already getting out and I believe Louie’s acceptance speech and the audience applause may have been more impactful.

As I mentioned in my previous post, I had doubts that Ric O’Barry’s confrontational approach towards the Japanese fisherman would get them to change their ways, but rather would harden their hearts. It seems that this is the case as the response today from these fisherman that kill dolphins is even more emphatically…you can’t tell me what to do.

A way you can help the dolphin’s and whale’s is to come on the June retreat and experience for yourself what it is like to be in their presence. Then you will be empowered to share with other people how you were touched by their precious presence. And together we can come up with an approach to ending human’s harming dolphins and whales that softens rather than hardens the human heart. Maybe it is to sing love songs to the perpetrator’s, or to let them see our suffering, or show how the dolphins helped us heal our own wounds. What a marvelous adventure!!

Let’s sing together with the dolphins.

In Peace,

As I watched the documentary, The Cove, my heart bled at seeing the dolphin’s being slaughtered by the Japanese fisherman. I, as I believe any sensitive empathic human, shed tears of sorrow from witnessing the dolphin’s suffer.

I applaud all those people who were involved in making The Cove for their courage to expose this barbaric slaughter of dolphin’s. In making this movie, they stood up for the dolphin’s because the dolphin’s could not stand up for themeselves.

I hope that the Japanese fisherman will recognize the folly of their ways and yet I am not sure this will happen, primarily because they seem so encrusted in their beliefs about their right to harm dolphin’s. Challenging and exposing their harmful actions, as The Cove has, does bring worldwide attention to this massacare. Yet, has it hardend the Japanese fisherman’s resolve to stay the course? I don’t know. I do know that when someone tells another person not to do something or that they are bad because of what they do, that person often responds with… who are you to tell me what to do, because they do not want to personally feel the pain or badness of their actions.

I do have a suggestion that might help to end the dolphin slaughter. When I saw the video of the dolphin slaughter my first emotional experience was the hurt, the saddness, and the pain that my heart felt for the dolphin’s suffering. I have chosen to stay with this experience as I have found that the pain of my wounded heart can be soothed and healed by my tears. And a wounded heart sometimes elicits compassion from others for the suffering and eventually opens other heart’s to empathically feel this wound and then respond with tender loving kindness.

I want the Japanese fisherman to see that my human heart bleeds for the bleeding dolphin’s heart’s… and just maybe, deep down, underneath their encrustations, they might recognize that their heart’s are bleeding as well.

Love,

A Dolphin Lover

What upsets me the most about the Japanese and other nations hunting and killing whales and dolphins is that they are interfering with another evolved mammalian species right to live peacefully and happily on our earth. They do not take the time to understand why Cetaceans are so peaceful and happy and how human’s have and could benefit from contact with Cetacean’s.

For most people, something wonderful, magical, and awe inspiring occurs when humans experience whales and dolphins in their natural environment. While spending their time living peacefully with each other and their environment, these beautiful Cetaceans emanate a sense of grace, vitality, grandeur, and majesty that causes the human heart to overflow with love.

What do Cetaceans do with all their free time living in a three dimensional watery space? I think they are singing love songs to each other and sharing the joy of being alive. And yet we know so little about how evolved they are, how conscious they are, what they communicate to each other, and what they really think about humans.

So let’s stop harming Cetaceans and take the time to learn to communicate with them. Just maybe they have a trick or two to communicate to us about the preciousnes of life. Wouldn’t that be a great surprise!!

A spokesman for Sea World justified kepping Orca’s in captivity for the following reasons. First, they are now mating and producing babies so they must be happy. Second, if they are released back into the wild they probably would not join another pod of wild Orca’s and will eventually die, as this is what happened when the captive Orca, Keiko, was released.

These are such ridiculous justifications and they do make me really angry. For a long time the Orca’s did not mate because they were so traumatized at being captured and isolated in cement holding tanks. Now they are probably mating because it is part of their normal behavior and they are so bored what else is there to do. This does not mean that they are happy. The Orca’s held captive live much shorter lives than wild Orca’s and it is not surprising that when introducing captive Orca’s into the wild it may take them some time to be adopted my another pod, if ever. Yet, this is not a justification for not releasing them back into the wild!!!

Orlando Sea World held their first Orca show on Saturday since the tragic death of Dawn Brancheau on Wednesday and get this… the theme of the show was “believe”, about a young boy who see’s an Orca at the Aquarium and then dreams of one day becoming a whale trainer!!! Obviously, they are trying to justify that being an Orca tainer is a great life achievement and are brainwashing all the children attending the show to believe that they should hope to one day become an Orca trainer.

I am dumbfouded at the depth of human ignorance. This pathetic story speaks for itself.

The documentary, The Cove, has been nominated for an Academy Award for best doumentary and there is a strong possibility that it will win. It is a heart wrenching movie about the annual slaughter of dolphins in a cove in Taiji, Japan. The movie also covers the history of dolphins in captivity. If you love dolphins and whales then I highly recommend you watch this documentary and then take whatever action you can to stop the dolphin slaughter and free captive dolphins and whales.

I wrote a post on 2/22/08 entitled, ‘Why Japanese Slaughter Whales and Dolphins’. I think it makes sense and ask that you take the time to read it. It is listed under Categories- Dolphin Slaughter on my blog/post page.

I also wrote a post on 3/18/08 entilted, ‘True Nature Divine Love Is The Solution.’ We need to do everything in our power to stop the slaughter of dolphin and whales (like the movie, The Cove ) and ultimately it is waking up to our true divine nature. Please take your time to read it. It is listed under Categories- Divine Love or True Nature on my blog/post page. Thank you.

On Wednesday, February 24, 2010 a male Orca at Orlando Sea World grabbed it’s trainer, Dawn Brancheau, around her waist and dragged her under the water until she drowned. Witnesses said that before this happened the Orca’s were not cooperating with the trainers during the show.

This is a tragic loss of a human life and I am also not surprised that this happened. I am not in favor of Cetaceans being held in captivity because it is unnatural for the them to spend their lives in a confined enclosure and does lead to abnormal behavior as expressed by this very sad incident.

The Humane Society has long campained for Marine Mammals to be removed from aquarium theme parks. Joyce Tishler, founder of the Animal League Defense Fund says, ” These behemouths are denied all of their natural instinctual inclinations.” She compares an Orca’s life in captivity to, ” keeping a human being in a bathtub for his entire life.”

I can imagine that if I was kept in a bathtub for my entire life and forced to do tricks for Cetaceans I would be very unhappy, develop abnormal behavior, and eventually lash out at my captors, just as this Orca did.
