Environmental ministers meeting in Luxembourg adopted a common position that supports the current moratorium against commercial whaling,  sets up whale sanctuaries,  and encourages the use of non-lethal methods to collect scientific data. “There is no need to kill whales to obtain scientific information about whales as adequate data for management purposes can be obtained using non-lethal techniques,” said the EU’s Executive Commission.

The European Commission has been working diligently to establish this joint position, and even though the 27 nation bloc is not yet a party to the International Whaling Commission it can still take a strong role at the IWC meeting in Santiago, Chile later this month by using it’s moral, political, and economic weight to ensure more effective protection of whales worldwide.
