Dolphin Births Boom in Mississippi Delta

A new survey published in the Marine Mammal Science journal says that since Hurricane Katrina dolphin births have boomed off the Mississippi and Alabama coast. The Hurricane destroyed 87 % of the fishing boats and commercial fishing hauls decreased 40-50% during 2005 and 2006. The increased births could be attributed to more fish available and less noise pollution.

Orca Drowns Trainer

On Wednesday, February 24, 2010 a male Orca at Orlando Sea World grabbed it’s trainer, Dawn Brancheau, around her waist and dragged her under the water until she drowned. Witnesses said that before this happened the Orca’s were not cooperating with the trainers during the show.

This is a tragic loss of a human life and I am also not surprised that this happened. I am not in favor of Cetaceans being held in captivity because it is unnatural for the them to spend their lives in a confined enclosure and does lead to abnormal behavior as expressed by this very sad incident.

The Humane Society has long campained for Marine Mammals to be removed from aquarium theme parks. Joyce Tishler, founder of the Animal League Defense Fund says, ” These behemouths are denied all of their natural instinctual inclinations.” She compares an Orca’s life in captivity to, ” keeping a human being in a bathtub for his entire life.”

I can imagine that if I was kept in a bathtub for my entire life and forced to do tricks for Cetaceans I would be very unhappy, develop abnormal behavior, and eventually lash out at my captors, just as this Orca did.

Dolphins As Non Human Persons

Scientist are now saying that dolphins are smarter than chimps and maybe as smart as humans so they are suggesting that dolphins be considered as non human persons and as such to be entitled to the same rights as humans. I say right on. The dolphins are probably thinking… maybe we should classify humans as non dolphin cetaceans!!!

Thousands of dolphins block Somali pirates

On April 14, 2009 Somali pirates were about to attack Chinese merchant ships when out of the blue came a pod of thousands of dolphins that swam in between the pirate boats and the merchant ships causing the pirates to turn away and abandon their attack on the Chinese merchant ships. Irrawaddy Dolphins

Scientist have discovered over 6,000 rare Irrawaddy dolphins living off the coast of Bangladesh. They are considered an endangered species so it makes me very happy to know that there exists a large and apparently healthy pod. I say Yeah to the well being of the Irrawaddy dolphin species!!! Aloha Cetacean Lovers,

Happy New Year 2009!!!

I have not sent a post for awhile as I have been involved with another project. I am still passionate about raising human awareness about the preciousness of the Cetacean species and have been following the world events that affect their livelihood.

I feel that my previous posts in 2008 and 2007 are still relevant today so maybe I should just resend them…. and yet there is still a lot more to talk about. So I will be posting again.

I recently saw the movie, Whale Dreamer, produced by Julian Lennon. You can rent it online or at Blockbuster. It is a beautiful uplifting true story about Australian aboriginal connection to the Whales.

High Oil Prices Benefits Whales, Dolphins, Tuna & Seals

Because of high oil prices only a third of long line tuna fishermen will be fishing this year and whale, dolphin & seal hunters will be feeling the pinch as well… most likely involved in business ventures that lose money .

An Uplifting Whale/Dolphin Story

Two pygmy sperm whales had been attempting to beach themselves on New Zealand shores and a group of people tried in vein for an hour and a half to get the whales to sea. They were exhausted and about to give up when Moko, a well known bottlenose dolphin that regularly plays with the swimmers, showed up and went straight to the whales.

A Consevation Officer, Mr. Smith, who was present at the time said, “I don’t speak whale and I don’t speak dolphin but there was oviously something that went on because the two whales changed their attitude of being quite distressed to following the dolphin quite willingly and directly along the beach and straight out to sea.” He said, ” The whales have not been seen since, but Moko the dolphin, had returned to its usual practice of playing with swimmers in the bay.”

” I shouldn’t do this I know, we are meant to remain scientific,” Mr. Smith said, ”but I actually went into the water with the dolphin and gave it a pat afterwards because she really did save the day.”

Sounds to me like the whales and dolphins were able to communicate with and understand each other and it is nice to have a happy ending for a change.

There Will Be Earthquakes

I attended a talk last night by Evan Hodkins on Celtic Mysticism. He was talking about the importance of telling the truth and that in Celtic tradition you would stand on a stone when telling the truth. If you stood on a stone and lied, “the stone would crack and there would be earthquakes.”

This made me think about the Japanese whalers and how much they have lied. They say they hunt whales for scientific purposes when in truth they killed them for food. They lied about Sea Shepherd harming them when the truth is they attempted to kill Captian Paul Watson. They lied about not trying to bribe other nations to vote in their favor at the I.W.C. meeting when the truth is those nations recently confessed that this did indeed happen.

So, I have a feeling that nature is going to respond to Japan’s harming the whales with some kind of earth event- not out of maliciousness or an intent to hurt or cause harm, but out of taking natural healing actions to let the Japanese whalers know that the earth will not put up with their harming and killing whales any longer.

In my book, Messages From The Dolphins, Chapter 4 – Dolphins to Humans on the Environment, I have said that the earth will repond to humans harmful actions by creating beneficial natural healing actions. If you follow world events then you will know that this has been occuring. The earth is wanting to get our attention so that we will begin treating all life with respect, appreciation, and gratitude.
